Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, raised in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was raised by parents who were socially aware and showed her how she could use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and was raised. Her father recalled watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was led her to direct a movie on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she earned diplomas in English as well as African American studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing to television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having duty of looking after the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her work as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. She also started several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective.
